Mixdown Question

Before I do a cubase mixdown my levels are up and the way I would like them. After the mixdown they are low! Not extremly low but low. I'm tracking @ 44k sample rate. I mixdown @ 44k as well in 24 bit. Should I record in 96k and mixdown @ 96k? I'm sure someone has an answer.

Sample rate and bit depth have nothing to do with volume. Something else is going wrong.

Thanks for reasuring myself.
I'm peaking volume when in playback in cubase.
 
What are you using to playback the mixdown file? If you're using something like iTunes or Windows Media Player, check the volume sliders on those programs as well as the volume sliders in your control panel prefs.

Have you tried Magneto as an insert on your master channel? It's sort of like a compressor and limiter for your mixes -- it will help boost your levels but still keep things from reading in the red. Try playing around with it.

Also check your VST plugins at the Master channel make sure the there are no plugins that will lower the volume or any plugins you are not aware of. Cubase by default has a plugin at the main channel.
 
What are you comparing your mixes to, volume-wise? If you are comparing to commercial recordings, then of course they are going to be lower. Those recordings have likely been professionally mastered and limited to be loud.

You can always mess around with a limiter on the master buss to get things louder, if you desire (the Kjaerhus Classic Master Limiter is a decent free limiter to try).
