Mixdown of our band - feedback please

I wish I were in a pub listening to that.

Very cool. Only _tiny_ niggle is that the drums need to come out a bit more, particularly the bottom end, and Mike's vox lose a bit of motivation just a couple of times -- most probably because he's also doing a fine job playing bass.

But that's being pretty picky. This is great. And I like the song.

Hey, it sounds great. Good guitar tone. I think I hear a push-pull amp just on the edge of breakup?
One thought: the vocals sound like they weren't sung very loud. I've discovered that you can get a more "intense" vocal if you move farther away from the mike and sing louder. With a setup like this, it helps if your monitoring is pretty loud, so you sing louder to try and hear yourself.
But you guys have a tight sound.

Nice tight band sound, funky guitar sounds really fine. It's tough to get a live sound, like others have said the vocals are a bit low at times, and the bass is a little louder that the drums. Maybe some compression on the bass would help balance it with the drums. Great performance though!

it's a great live capture, though...
it sounds like a practice session..... in that, if you multi tracked everything individually, of course, you'd be able to bring out the best of every piece, especially the drums..

if you guys tracked in the headphones, with guitar and bass direct, you could get a great recording of just the drums with multi-tracks, and then overdub guitars and bass and vox on top of that...
the vox could use some background vox, for some harmony....

Thanks for the listen, GONZO-X. We're just starting to work on recording live drums in Mike's basement studio. Good suggestion about the headphones. We've gotten a lot of great suggestions from this thread to use next time we get together. Thanks again!

You could always do a half-live/half studio thang. Zappa did it quite a bit, particularly on Sheik Yerbouti. The main tracks are live, but a lot of other tracks are added later. Makes for interesting stuff, it has the energy of an actual performance with the finesse of a studio take.

Nice funky-blusey vibe to it.

Your band sounds well rehearsed.

The snare need some level, the kick is a little undefined to.

But hey its a live recording, and it brings much more joy IMHO than a sterile recording session

Good feel to it. I'd add a little in the low mids of the guitar and reduce them in the bass gtr if you've got separate tracks recorded.

DavidK - cool idea about the overdubs. We still have a couple of tracks left on the ADAT....

Nakatira - thanks for the listen, glad you liked it. We played together pretty steady in a cover band many years ago. All originals last few years. But lately haven't had much practice with our drummer, Lee because he works out of town. Mike and I still get together regularly because we live just a couple of kms apart. This is either the first or second time Lee has actually played this song - he just listened to it on tape before that. This is one of our first tries micing drums. The low snare and bass are a common comment so we'll look further into the micing on those pieces when remix and when we record next time.

Tim - thanks for listening. I'll make the adjustments to the guitar and bass eq's when this is remixed. We have separate tracks (line in) for them, so that should be pretty easy to do. I find the line in on the Mesa that we're using F50? has a nice sound (micing would be better of course ).

Cool tune... but I would try to pull the guitar back from stepping so hard on the vocals. It's a little high in the mix for me (albeit I'm listening on $10 computer speakers).

Hey Doug - thanks for taking the time to listen to our tune. I'll look at the eq'ing of the guitar versus the vocals when we remix this. I think my PC speakers would be a good place to check for that once it's done....thanks again!

I believe the LEVEL is more the culprit than the EQ...

It starts at the right level... but stays there. I think it would mix better with the guitar level coming down during the vocal passages.

But that's just me.

Ahhhhhh.....I get it now.....I'm a newb when it comes to mixing so forgive me. I'll try riding the faders to see if I can get a better balance during the vocal parts. Thanks!

Its soome quality blues. I can always get down with blues rock. I think the vocals have a lot of bottom end to much low for my taste. up the mids imo. for a live recording its good.

Oh my god, it sounds like Dylan signing! Drums are way too low and sound like 2 stereo mic is all that was used. Vocals too up front. Gtr. sound kind of cool, but it sounds like d/i recorded. Maybe a ad bit more raunchy? Bass too loud or too much low/sub har. freq. I do like the tune mind you. With a few tweaks it ll be vry,very nice.

vocalist sounds like he's straining to be quiet. take the mic way back, give it reverb and let him wail. guitar sounds like it's from one of those demonstration record tracks, smooth, but no amp sound, bass is flabby, drums too low, in that order those are what bugs me. but if recorded or mixed better, it all works well and it deserves better.

Liked this song very much vocals have a bit of clapton there well done and the nice clean guitars are cool ...lots of this kinda stuff going down on sat afternons in glasgow bars at the moment which is good ...great stuff and good luck with your music from The Tartan Rascals.
