Hey all

I've been having some trouble with mixdowns from reasonably big multitrack sessions (30-40-odd tracks) crashing out to desktop before the mixdown is complete. Not all sessions; just some of 'em. I suspect either corrupt session info or maybe just too many effects on my busses - has anyone else encountered this problem and/or know of a work-around?

I'm running a Duron 1.2 w/ 1G RAM - possibility my CPU is getting swamped I guess ...

Any suggestions gratefully received.

cheers
Luke

have you tried locking the effects on the tracks prior to mixdown?

Mine is crashing with about 15 tracks. Also I'm not using any plugins when this happens.

Using a PIII 933MHz 512ram.

it's your PC man...not the program.
PIII at 933.....not super fast...but good enough for minimal usage..

15 tracks of .WAVs at 30-50 megs a track....thats 450 - 750 megs of data to run...
That is a lot of data man...

try doing some sub-mixes and open in another session....
it might help,
Joe

Thanks for the info joro. It only crashes occasionally, but i'll try the submixes to see if it helps...especially since i'll be adding some effects.

WRONG!!!

Mine consistently crashes every time I right click on the EQ values in mixer view. (on the higher numbered tracks.)

Every Time!!!

Without notice, the program instantly closes and I am left looking at the desktop.

I will re-install it soon. If it continues, this program will be history. I’ll never use it again and I'll always recomend against it to others.

It's could be your video card...or power supply...or just about anything besides the program. I've used CEP for years, and it's pretty stable. About a year ago, I started having similar problems for awhile, then I replaced my power supply. But yours really sounds like a video card problem. Are you using an NVidia card?

My power supply is brand new and of good quality from PC Power and Cooling. My video card is new also but not high end at all. It is only a Radeon 7000. Since this machine is for music only, I reasoned that I only needed a fair 2D card instead of a 3D gaming card.

Okay I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. I do have other computers and video cards lying around. I’ll try swapping out some things.

Thanks man!
Will let you know.

Okay, I swapped out my 7000 video card with a gforce2 and the program still closes when I right click on those EQ values. Then I replaced that with an older TNT2 card and still the same thing.

I installed Audition on an older computer, (completely different hardware) and still the same oddball crashing.

I then fired up my old Cool Edit Pro 2.0 (I kind of remember that it used to crash a lot) Well, it does a similar thing. That is, it gives an error message stating that CEP2 has a problem and needs to close. Then it’s gone!

Two program versions, two different computers...I would say that is sufficient evidence to blame it on the software.

I think Adobe has a bug and doesn't know it.

Hi Rawdepth,

Can you give a more precise account of the problem? Exactly which version are you using (normally)? When you click on whatever it is wherever it is (call me dumb but I'm not entirely sure from your description), do you always get a crash? What sort of track number are you talking about? Basically I want to see if I can reproduce this here, especially if you are talking about the new version (Audition 1.5), but to do so I need to be sure I'm accurately repeating what you are doing.

I had a similar problem with mixing down. I found that certain effect combinations would "freeze" CEPro V2.0. I had to shut the app down by force. I figured this out by going thru each track and removing effects or changing the order they were applied. I've not encounterd this same problem w audition 1.5.

I start up Audition 1.0 or CEP 2.0 and start a new session. It doesn’t seem to matter whether I have wav files loaded or how the session properties are set. Now let’s say I press ALT-2 to bring up the mixer window. (I know you wouldn’t normally jump to the mixer if the multitrack is empty, but just for purposes of this demonstration, let’s go there anyway.)

I prefer to display all of the track controls and parameters so I turn on all of the little tool buttons at lower left. Since I have plenty of screen real estate, I also prefer to see lots of tracks. So I drag open the mixer window to display at least 16 tracks.

If I right click on the EQ values of lower numbered tracks, say 1 through 11, the track equalizer will appear. If I right click on any EQ values for higher numbered tracks, the whole program instantly disappears off the screen. I am left looking at my desktop because the program has ended without warning.

Let me know if it does it for you.
Thanks

Nice one - yes, I can reproduce that here. But in Audition 1.5 it seems to be fixed. I'll file a bug report at Adobe however, just to make sure that this has totally been dealt with.

Misbehaving programs can ruin a business. I don't want a program that is not stable. That alone was stopping me from upgrading to 1.5. In fact I was already searching for a replacement. Perhaps I will reconsider now if you declare that it is fixed.

Hmmm.

Thanks.

I wouldn't claim that 1.5 is totally stable under all circumstances - and probably Adobe wouldn't either, given its complexity - in any program of that size, there will always be the possibility of a user doing something unforseen or untested which produces an unexpected result. But so far I've had no crashes with the new version. Try the tryout of 1.5 and see how you go with it before going elsewhere. Some of the new tools are just jawdropping, and unique - assuming that they are useful in your work, which of course might not be the case.
