Mix To Critique: Music To Sleep By

nice tune and sounds... but I don't think the "club dance" drum sound will let me get any zzzzz's ! Actually I think the downfall of the piece is the percussion stuff. I want to say the intro stuff is panned too wide, but eh... why not?

I'da taken the solo synth line in stereo too.... just like the rest of the ear candy.

after a bit, (taking under consideration this might be background music), I find the percussion to start to bug me and compounds the repeptive nature of the music. I almost think you could ditch the track completely and leave rhythmic "sounds" in its place.

all in all, I really like this kind of music and hope to hear more from you in this vein.

Hello Eyesore -- Welcome to the board!

This is pretty cool, but a little repetitive for my taste ... though I do know what you are going for here...kind of that ambiant "falling asleep" feel which is cool.

Sounds well played and I like the buildup throughout the tune...Not really my style, but I like the recording.

:)

Thanks for the replies, guys!

mixmkr, you're exactly right - I panned that wide because I could. The part is basically an acoustic guitar pattern, but I thought why not pan out each of the 'strings' across the stereo field to get this ultra wide 'guitar' (but played upright, I guess :) )

Yeah, the title is almost a joke, but refers more to the repetitive nature of the 2 chords repeating over and over. I have had other people tell me there is no way they could sleep to it too. You see, my one friend used to listen to what we called 'techno' and that crap would just repeat stuff over and over and I would always make fun of it. Then he would listen to some other stuff that was really slow and boring to me, too. I would always say that the stuff he listened to was "Music To sleep By" Then when I got one of these sequencing programs I thought I would exploit that a little, but I try 2 add something each time through the pattern until the point where the vocal comes in.

Yeah, the piece is purposefully over - repetitive. And it's not really my style, either, boydrj :D

As usual (sorry), I am more concerned 'bout the levels and eq of things. Do you think maybe that kick just needs to come down some and maybe the bass too, while bringin' the vocal up a bit? I wanted the vocal really low in the mix, but maybe I overdid it? Anyone notice any distortion in the bass end - that is what I am most afraid of I guess.

Thanks to everyone.

I agree with the previous comments.. There's no way I could fall asleep to that thump..

pretty cool piece that slowly started to drive me insane.. It would be nice if it lead somewhere or the drum sounds changed eventually.. It's almost too thumpy for non-dance music.. unless it is dance music?

Thanks for listening. non dance music or not? I don't know. I hate classifying things into genres anyway. If it is it's own thing, then that is good. If it was driving you insane, then I guess it was true to the music that inspired it :) That stuff nearly drove me insane! lol Yeah, if I changed drums sounds at some point in the song or made it really lead somewhere then it would defeat the point of the song. I don't expect it should be everyone's favorite song nor something you would want to listen to all the time.

groovejunkie, I don't know why it wouldn't work for you. I am not familiar with that page that you say comes up for you. My page should come up with a link to the song that you then click to play it.

Any more mix comments? How is that bottom end? Anyone listnin' on cheap speakers to let me know how they handle it? Thanks.
