mix down to sound blaster5.1

After spending $$$ on a new bass (not to mention Christmas) I can't justify (convince the wife) buying an Audiophile plus software. A friend has a SB5.1 and a CD burner. Can I mix down from my TASCAM Portastudio to sterio on the SB5.1 and pan the tracks where I want them in the mix? My friend says since it's surroundsound it's front/back not left/right.

ps. I can probably swing cakewalk hs2002.

i believe the "surround" aspect of sblive5.1 is only for the output ... the input is just a L/R stereo mini plug.

if you only want to burn a CD of exactly what you hear from your portastudio, just hook up the stereo output to the Line In of the soundcard and you'll be set. In this case, panning would happen on your Portastudio.

if you're talking about doing your mixing on the computer, you'd have to send in the tracks 2 at a time, and re-sync them later.

You can in fact do that and use your mixer for the panning, but you need some type of recording software to track it.
You can obtain free demo versions of many software programs on the net. Its a try before you buy free demo downloads.
