Just curious. Who does master in the same room they recorded and / or mixed in?

I do. I have a room for tracking, that has some stuff up for damping, and then a pc in another room, that I mix and do whatever is close to "Mastering" for me. I've learned what my stuff sounds like, sort of, and use it that way.

We recorded, mixed and mastered our first CD all in the same room. It came out OK, but now that I know better, all mastering is left to the professional mastering studios.

I just got a bill of approx $10K for room treatments at my new digs and I still would recommend different rooms. Mix rooms are designed for a different type of listening and work environment than mastering.

But since this is home recording do watcha can ...

Will be coming, still at the building stages so not very interesting yet. Just a bunch of fiberglass. :)

Yeah, I guess there are enough cloned versions of John's sudio, time for something different :D

wait...what are you talking about??

Pics from John's studio have been ripped by at least one site. I thought that this was general knowledge. We've all been ripped somewhere. I've seen content from my site elsewhere as well.

I do it all in the same cramped, inadequate, acoustically horrific room. Mind you, I'm not trying to sell the product to anyone. :D

Not that I wouldn't, mind you, if I thought I could get away with it. :D

I use different rooms. I like to hear a different perspective. Mastering demands a different set of criteria anyway.

But, then, I don't master anything but my own stuff. No time. Track, mix, out the door. I know when to quit.

yeah, for homereccers different room would be tough. I don't even have a separate control room!

I think a different pair of speakers is a good goal, especially if you are using nearfields. Maybe stick a good pair of hifi speakers on the other side of the room, and spin your chair around to listen. Keep in mind the need for some symmetrical room treatment if you do that. There are lots of relatively cheap DIY hifi kits out there, PartsX and Madisound have nice ones :)

I am going to add a pair of full-range driver speakers to my setup, once the builder I have finally hired :o does my room in March :) Sort of the opposite idea as above, but they will double as rear surrounds and consumer-system mix checkers.

Oops I forgot about this thread and promising pics.

I do have one on my site, see:

http://www.masteringhouse.com/about.html

I plan to get a pro photographer in here soon, so please excuse my lack of skills in the photography area. I'll have more then if anyone is interested.

I track and mix in the same small, untreated room. :o

As for mastering, I usually just tame the peaks with volume envelopes and then normalize once I'm happy with the sound of the mix and overall volume.

If you want to call that mastering, then yes, I do it all in the same room.

And that's just the transporter room! (see below). Sorry, Tom, I got inspired and bored at the same time...a dangerous combo :D.

Seriously, the new website remodel looks great, as does the new mastering suite! I personally would love to see more pics (I promise not to mess around with them ;) :o .)

@ Tom - Looks great - The big-screen is a nice touch... Been wanting to throw one in the front for some time...

@ SSG - That's killin' me here... Awesome... :D

OMFG!

Yer killing me too G, it does have that vibe. I'm gonna have to superimpose a wormhole or something on the LCD screen.

And thanks John!
