Cd someone explain something for me? I am doing the final step for a CD that consists of 5-15 min pieces of music. The blank CD says it will hold 70 MB or 80 min of music. I thought each piece should be the same since they are all exactly 15 min long but so far (I'm converting to wav right now) two of them are 151 MB & another is 252 MB! I know that more tracks take up more space but these are all 2 track stereo (I think?) when they convert dn to wav. Why is there such a difference?

Secondly while we're at it, I'm not clear about formating since that takes up space also. Is it all the same or is there a difference (in terms of how much space it occupies) bet CDR & CDRW, & bet quick & full format (I forget exactly what they are called)?

How do other people handle this when space is tight? Thanks!!!

Check the bit depth and sample rate of those files. In order to burn to audio CD, the files must be 16-bit/44.1k sample rate. If they are higher, you'll have to dither them. When creating and audio CD, the length of the piece determines whether or not it will fit, not necessarily the size. So, you could get approximately 4 15min pieces on a single disc, though it would be a tight fit.

Read that again buddy! "Normal" CDs hold about 650MB (~74 minutes) and some (most?) hold 700MB (or 80 minutes). Each minute of CD-ready music will take up ~10MB of space (two channels of 16-bit 44.1khz wav data)

I think I know what happened. I'll check tonite. Sometimes when I go to the end of the song it's about 2 hours long - for some reason... I think a little beep must show up way dn the time line even though the real song is only 15 min long. So the wav file probably included more than the 'real song". What about formating - does it always take up the same amount of space? How much/

Its simple math.

CD audio eats up 176.4kbytes/sec - ((16 bits *44,100Hz)/8)*2

15mins of CD audio equals 158.76Mbytes

I have no idea what formatting you keep referring to, but I answered how much space CD audio takes up (brzilian did as well), so I'm not sure what other information you're seeking...

The table of contents on the cd is not a consideration. You either have 72 minutes or 80 minutes depending on the cd. That is all you have to worry about.

74 minutes is the standard maximum length for a CD, 80 minutes is an overburned disk. It doesn't matter what format etc.... When you make a Red Book Compatible CD, those are the basic limitations.
