Hello,

I am looking into buying a portable audio recording setup with a laptop and a Presonus Firepod.

I will probably only need 4 tracks, but might need more in the future.

What are the lowest specs for a Windows laptop I can use for this setup?

I am just trying to find the floor to base my shopping upon.

I will be looking for 512mb ram.

Thanks

I'm not expert, but you'll probably be ok with any computer with decently modern specs. Some are gonna be betters than other for audio, and that's what you should be searching for. But in the case of 4-8 tracks of recording, you should be fine. My computer is from 2000, and I can run about 10 tracks of simultaneous recording, and about 25 tracks total. I think I have 128mb Ram.

You'll eventually probably want a few more tracks though.

Thanks for your reply.

This laptop will be for location recording only.

I will edit on my desktop.

So the max I will ever use will be the input capability of the sound card.

So would you think a 1ghz or higher processor?

This is a finacial relief if I can get a lesser model.

Thanks

I used to do 16 tracks with my old Celeron 433 Mhz.

The problem isn't in the tracking but in the mixing. You won't be able to handle more than a couple effects with a computer that slow. If you're mixing at home, that doesn't matter.
