Minimal Booth

I will need to set up a place/booth to record one instrument; vibes is [are?] the larger. My little reading on studio gets me to believe that the heavy soundproofing that goes on is to keep OUT extraneous sound. Is that correct? If so, it would seem that all I need to do is prevent the instrument sound from bouncing around since I fortunately have a virtually soundless environment. Perhaps some absorbing screens would do it for me.

The absorbing materials that I have seen from vendors has been on the order of $2.60 a square foot and that seems steep to me. Are there less expensive do-it-yourself materials available?

This is not totally about the money. For over a month I have been collecting a DAW, software, mics, preamps[still being built], referbishing instruments. AND I ain't played a song yet!! Somewhere it's got to get real.

Any discussion greatly appreciated.
