Mindprint DI port vs DMP3

Well....

Tex: I'm in the Netherlands, so I doubt the availability of the RNMP here. While the Meek VC1Q is a $100 cheaper here than in the U.S. of Monkey Bush. ;)

Chess: I know, but they are hard choices. I like retro-looks, so the DMP-3 would cut it for me, before the DI-Port.
AND!!!!! The DMP-3 (like I said before) has VU-meters, a 30dB pad switch per channel and a phase reverse switch per channel.
Besides, the DMP-3 has balanced outputs, instead of the RCA's that the DI-Port uses.

I know that the DI-Port has the cool DAC-shit goin' on, but when it comes to some home-recording, I'm a simple man, and I don't want to buy an extra TOSLink cable from DI-Port to my Korg D16.

Oh, another thing, what about that AN/DI-pro I saw on the MindPrint-website?
Or is that more expensive than the DI-Port? It looks to me like a sort of stripped down Envoice, with no EQ and comp.

Oh, and that DTC looks like a real mutha!!!!!!! DAMN, I want that!
Forget Neve, Great river, etc.... :D
Gotta admit, the DTC looks the coolest of all!

From Pro Audio Review's fairly positive review of the DI-Port:

Though it doesn't have analog outputs dedicated to the preamps, you can get a pure preamp signal from the monitor jacks if you crank the mix control fully clockwise.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shouldn't that be "counter-clockwise"? For if it's cranked clockwise, it takes the signal coming from the S/PDIF in jack and puts it through the monitor out jacks, but when cranked the other way it takes the incoming analog signal(s).

I have one of these. It's a sweet piece of equipment, and fairly inexpensive too!

Here's some sample prices for Mindprint gear in Australia. It will at least give you a ratio of costs.

MINDPRINT Envoice mic preamp,eq,tube compressor $899
MINDPRINT Andipro 24bit 96khz stereo mic preamp,a/d convertor $1239
MINDPRINT Diport 24bit 48khz dual preamp,dig convertor a/d,d/a $569

I am considering buying a di-port but have read somewhere on a review that it wont be very suitable for recording in 16bit because it has no dithering option. It this correct? What do you think?

Oh and another "bad" thing about the DI-Port

I sort of re-did this thread on Harmony Central, and JM350 (also a member here) pointed out that the load impedance (am I correct?) of both the En-Voice and the DI-Port is far too high (10 kOhm) especially for dynamic mics like a SM57...

Can someone make things clear on this?
To me the DMP-3 really looks better (looks and options-wise) than the DI-Port.
Because of:
-low cut 75 Hz switch
-30dB pad switch
-phase reverse switch
-balanced outputs
-VU-meters
-cheaper than DI-Port
-load impedance of 3 kOhm instead of 10 kOhm.

For you, then, it looks like it (the dmp3) will be a better option. It appears to have the features you need.

Someone like myself, on the other hand, might be better off with the Mindprint. For instance, I have almost all unbalanced inputs on my sound card, so the unbalanced outs are a positive thing for me. I also have a dmp2 that I like using on dynamic mics, so the impedence won't be an issue. And finally, I have a sound card that has lots of ins and outs, but I could still use a step up in the quality of A/D conversion (and I never record above 44.1 khz anyway, so that's not an issue either).

My point is that what you get depends on a lot of factors. For you, it looks like the DMP3 is the way to go. And it's an incredible pre for the money. Ver CLEAN GAIN . . . I've also noticed that with my dmp2, I can distinguish the characteristics of my different mics better, whereas with my other pres they all kind of sound similar. Now that says a lot.

I can't believe how much ranting I've been doing on this subject. :) Man, someone shut me up. Disregard the above post.

I just got the last one at the Sam Ash in lovely Lombard, IL. Not bad at all. Preamp sounds nice and open, lots of headroom, clean gain, and the clip indicator works very well. I'm noticing less of a noise floor on the a/d conversion, too. My inputs are unbalanced RCA, also, which works well.

I'm not ready to put it under my pillow, or play doll houses with it just yet, but I like my mind-control print.

I am very curious, though, about the implications of the differences in resistance (the Mindprint being 10K and the dmp2/3 being 3K). Dan Kennedy from Great River seems to suggest on the other thread that the 3K range tends to be optimal for most condensers for an accurate response curve. Hmmm. And I get the feeling he knows a thing or two more than the average Joe (no pun intended) when it comes to mic pres.

Speed Demon also mentioned something about this a few posts ago. Any thoughts anyone? I'm totally dumb when it comes to this stuff. :) Dan's post seems to suggest that the higher frequencies will get bumped up on a higher-impedence pre, while my common sense suggests to me that higher resistance means the pre won't clip/distort as easily, which could be an advantage for things like close-micing drums? Or am I just an idiot? Where's Ethan when you need him?
