I don't know if I ever knew what I was doing, but now I completely feel like I don't....please help. I have a Behringer ub1622fx-pro, alesis 3630 compressor and a tube pac preamp/compressor. How should all of this be set up? In other words, I would like one mic going through the tube and the other going through the alesis and then the whole lot going out to my computer, but it seems that I have always had one mic through the tube into the behringer, then the behringer to the alesis and then from the alesis to my computer...am I nuts or is there a better way and am I missing something. I read one thread that said the main outs should go to the computer, but for some reason I am not doing that. I think the main reason is because the alesis has the ability to have left and rights in and outs, so I felt I should use them both....but maybe I don't need both, since only one mic is utilizing. If you can help me get back on track, I would appreciate it...I clearly am lost when it comes to this stuff and could use some help.

Ken

If your mixer has an insert in the channel strip, connect the 3630 there.

the compressor does not have any mic inputs, only 1/4". So I assume it is best to use the mic to mic input on my mixer. I don't know if I can route that one channel to the compressor....and then back again????...and then out to the computer with the main outs. I have control outputs, aux sends, sub outputs all number with 1's and 2's but I don't know if they pertain to channels or what? Should I know this stuff...really I can take it.

Not familiar with that mixer, but it should(although it is a behringer) have a 1/4" insert jack on each channel.

Plug a cord like this into it. Plug the Send side of the cable into the 3630's 1/4" Input Jack, and plug the Return side of the Insert cable into the 3630's Output Jack.

I understand the single cable going into stereo or left and right in the compressor, but I don't think I have a send for each channel. I have inputs for each channel, but I'm not sure what the send would be, if it exists, for each channel. It has Aux sends 1 and 2, stereo aux returns and left/mono right returns, on the back there are Channel inserts 1-4, sub outs and main outs......but does any of that to specific channels and then even if I can channel in and channel out, where do I then bring it back to?
Basically I have the mic in channel two, I want to send that to the compressor, bring it back and then main everything out. Does that sound like a typical setup? I have mostly used the mixer as a preamp and recorded everything very simply, but now I need to start using some bells and whistles..I am even considering using a vocal processor to clean up some of my vocals...and I can't even begin to think of how that would be hooked up.

Thanks.

I agree. Hosa cables are a perfect compliment to this setup.

Here's the mixer I use.

Does your mixer have insert jacks?

The UB1622 has 4 inserts on the back (one for each mono channel). Use a cable like EZ_Willis showed. The TRS end goes into the insert on the mixer and the other ends go to the input and output of the compressor. The mixer uses the tip of the TRS for send and the ring for return so you only need the one connection per channel at the mixer. You can download a manual for the UB1622 at the Berhinger web site

RTFM for Pete's sake. You can learn so much when you take a little interest.

I did read the manual and htf am I supposed to know what tip and ring mean and the way they explain it is for an alien to understand. Anyway, thank you erichs, that makes complete sense now. I really appreciate it....and robertd go find a board where people don't ask questions from people who have answers...maybe there is a board out there where no one talks about anything because everyone is so f'in smart and have read all the manuals needed to get by in life and there are zero posts...and zero replies...Good luck with that.

ps
that channel insert thingy is really cool!!! Man I wonder what else I don't know.... Just thought I'd throw out a newbie dork comment. Thanks again.
