miking toms...

so I need a good mic for the bass drum... probably going with either the Beta 52 or the Audix D-6. Two 81s for the overheads, and now I need tom mics. maybe a hi-hat one also. I need something with a good sound for toms. Thanks

Though I personally haven't used them as such, some people I trust really like Oktava mk012's on toms.

sennheiser md-421s if you want killer mics that you can use on multiple sources.

You sure you don't mean they use them for overheads? Small diaphram condensor doesn't seem like the first choice for close micing a tom.

Try the AKG D112 on your kick. The D6 sounds real good too. People might shake their fingers at this, but I have seven toms, and I can't afford the MD421's YET, so I'm using clip-on 604s.

I really like the audix D2 and D4 personally. I can get good sounds with them anyway

But a large diaphram condenser like the B1 is? Come on now ... skrew in the pads on the Oktavas and you're as good as gold. I fluctuate between these, 57's/58's, sennheiser e609's, an e825, and an AT Pro25, depending on my mood and the group I'm recording.

he is correct...though I wouldnt dare put mine in any position to get whacked with a stick, I have heard of people using them to close mic their toms.....

I use condensors on snares and toms all the time too. It just depends on the drums and drummer and tune it's going in to. I have a pair of C-1000s that only see the light of day on the occaisional toms or snare.
