miking a guitar speaker cab

hi,im going to buy a guitar amp for recording guitar track.
anyone knows if it's better to use a 1x12,2x12 or 4x12?
I heard that it sounds better using a small cab for miking.is it?
and I should use a seperated "Head and Speaker Cab" or a Combo if I place it in a booth?
I will record both clean and distorted tone!
thanks

It depends on the guitar, the amp, the mic, the room, the micing technique, and the player. There is no "a 1x12 is always better than a 4x12" answer.

Consider your environment restrictions, though. If you crank a Marshall stack loud enough to sound good, are your neighbors going to call the cops?

The main reason for using a smaller tube amp is that you can crank it up and get some nice distortion without it being crazy loud. If you want the amp controls and cab in seperate rooms then obviously you want to use a seperate head and cab.

Get whatever works for you.
