i was wanting to get some info on soundcards. i have basically narrowed my choices to the delta 1010 or delta 66. what im baiscally doing is production for r&b and hip hop and will primarly be using mpc2000xl & a midi keyboard running thru cubase vst 5.0. i was basically wanting to know is the 1010 overkill for what i have to use & im not trying to break the bank either.

thanks in advance

The 1010 will have multiple inputs with mic pre's.
The 66 has less inputs and no mic pre's.

The Delta 66/Omni would be a good choice but there's no midi. You could add the USB Midisport 2x2 and come in around the same price as the 1010 with a little more functionality and less overkill.

Personally, headphone jacks are essential and the Omni box offers plenty of monitoring options - the 1010 does not - its the only reason I didn't get it.

The C-port may be a contender here, too - for the price.

Or for $159.95, you could get the Audiophile 24/96 with midi I/O and have money left over...

I was under the impression that it didn't have mic pre's. The 1010LT does, but not the 1010.

WHY doesn't the 1010 have dedicated headphone and monitor outs WITH actualy physical volume controls??? The fact that it doesn't has made my sound card decision a pain in the ass. If I've got some crazy feedback or noise I don't wanna have to go locate my mixer window and locate the right fader to turn it down. It wouldn't be so bad if they made their control panel mixer able to accept MIDI....hmmm.

elevate,

your impression is correct, the Delta 1010 has no mic preamps, just 8 analog line inputs and a stereo S/PDIF port.

The 1010 is a pretty bare design meant to be only an excellent audio interface, with balanced or unbalanced analog i/o, a word clock interface for interfacing with other digital gear, and a MIDI interface. It's not very useful unless you are using a mixer with it. If you had a mixer you'd be using the faders to control your output levels and drive your phones.

The units with heaphones monitoring jacks also typically have two or four mic preamps and are meant to be all-in-one units, usable without an external mixer.

Yea, that's what I figured. I'm just a cheap bastard and don't want to buy a mixer. I was leaning towards the Aark Q10, but with the driver fiasco, I'm hesitant to say the least. Right now the MOTU 828 and 896 are under heavy consideration, but my concern with them is that MOTU seems like a very Mac-centric company, so again, drivers are at issue.

Elevate, my bad, you're right, I get the 2 mixed up sometimes.

so if that the case with the 1010, what would be some good suggestion (midiman or other cards as well)

thanks

Audiophile 2496 gets my vote for cost/performance. Also, look at the Echo range of cards.

Or a combination of a cheap soundblaster Live! value for the midi together with the delta 66 with/without the omni I/O break out box for audio and monitoring capability.
