I just tried my audio card/breakout box for the first time today and everytime I hit record, my PC shuts down. I am running an Athlon 500, with WIN98, with 128 mb ram and also have a Monster Sound audio card installed. I am assuming there is a conflict somewhere. All I know is that it doesn't work at this point. Any suggestions? thanks in advance!

Hi.

You're probly right, sounds like a nasty conflict.

I don't know if you've tried this, but look at the system properties window (ie by pressing windows key and break) and look at the device manager tab. In the Sound Video and Game Controllers section, do you see any little yellow circles with exclamation marks in them? If so there's a conflict which needs resolving. You can do this using the Wizard, or you can ask me!

I've run a 2044 in an Athlon system so I don['t think that's the problem (but don't get any Aark gear without doing some research!)

G'luck,

Matt-
I already checked my IRQ's. There appear to be no conflicts. It has it's own IRQ number, no sharing going on there. I'm wondering if it's a conflict between the sound card and audio card? I read in one of the forums, windows sometimes has a hard time differentiating which driver to pick. Any clue? Thanks for replying, I was beginning to think that no one cared!

Crumbs, not so sure anymore.

Here's two suggestions:

Take out the monster card, see if the 2044 works on its own.

If it does, then put both back in, but don't use pci slots 1 or , um , the last one. Do you use an agp graphics card/USB devices? Either way, try this.

Oh, and what software are you using?

I use either Cakewalk 9 or Vegas Pro. I had a nasty little problem last night and found out that the system doesn't like the 2 together at all. What I'm thinking is-I have both WIN 98 and WIN NT installed on my PC. I thought I'd put all my recording stuff on NT, solves the problem, I think...

Yes, as long as you have all the drivers for 2000...

Any success yet? Did you try taking the monster out?

Matt-

I am so frustrated at this point, I'm ready to throw the darn thing out in the street and run it over until it's nothing. I tried taking out the monster card. I deleted every driver for it and the DMAN, then reinstalled the DMAN clean. It finally booted up without the drivers. I then installed the drivers and went into cakewalk to set the preferences. It then shut off.

What is odd about the whole thing is this, I had them coexisting peacefully last week until I tried to record something and that is when all the problems began. Now I can't even get the PC to boot up when the card is in.

I use an AGP graphics card(Lillith Banshee) and USB. The last time I installed the card and the drivers, it did share the USB IRQ, I removed the USB cause I don't use it. Still, doesn't work! I'm pretty sure I'm using the KX133 chipset on my motherboard (which is what they suggest).

I don't know, if you have any suggestions that are more appealing than "killing" the card, please let me know!

Blimey, that sounds serious.

What I'd do in your situation is take out both soundcards and reinstall windows. Then put the DMAN back in (but don't use slot one or the last slot) and then try to make it work again.

But I don't know how comfortable you are with reinstalling Windows (I generally have to do it every month or two if I'm lucky!)

If this doesn't work (and I'm not so confident) then I'd almost start to think there was something wrong with the card. It sound uncomfortably like the time I put a card in ( can't remember what kind) and failed to slot it in properly. It worked for a while (kinda).

I guess you'd have to phone/email DMAN (they're actually really nice) and ask about compatibility issues. Failing that, send it back!!!

Sorry I can't be of more help, I've never really had that sorta problem with the 2044. But I've had a different problem, maybe I'll tell you about that when you've made it record!

Best of luck,

matt

Matt-
I just thought I'd post the email I received from Midiman today:

"Its staring to sound like there is a physical hardware conflict. I have seen this on very few computers. I've seen it mainly on HP's and Compaq's. There very
picky about hardware been installed. The weird part is that if you stick a Delta card in the same machine it works just fine. I think it might have something
to onboard chip conflicting with the chipset on the motherboard. Another possibility is that the other sound card had a crystal chipset. This is difficulty a
conflict. The crystal can only have one chipset per motherboard. If this is not the case, might I suggest E-Bay."
This is the actual e-mail, I changed nothing.
I'm thinking that this guy doesn't know what he's doing!
Thanks, for all your help, though, I am thinking about just dumping $300 into an Intel Celeron system and see how that works.
Who knows!

Cakey2,

Why would you reinstall Windows every month or two? And this is "if you're lucky???

keep trying....it took me TEN days of headaches to get my 424 installed, and just at the moment my buddy who is a computer wizard said it couldnt be installed it started working.its great now

I agree with DAB -- I was ready to pitch my machine too when I put it together with a SB Live and a Delta 66 inside. It took me nearly a month off-and-on to get it working completely OK. Kind of crazy, isn't it, that we'll put up with this kind of stuff with computers...

Alchuck,

I normally have to reinstall every so often because I like to ask windows and my pc to do things that it's not really supposed to do (I generally run three soundcards at once, for example). Actually, since I set up my pooter to dual-boot it's not been so much of a problem, but when I got my Aark Aardvark I had to do a fresh windows install.

Levitron,

Hmm, doesn't sound sure, does he? Could be a mobo compatibility issue, though. Do you have an old PC to try the 2044 out on? Or can you use a friends?

G'luck,

matt

Cakey2,

Oh, OK, if you're pulling stuff out and popping stuff in constantly, reinstalling ans uninstalling drivers and software and such, I could see maybe needing to do it once in a while.

Ha! Case in point.

Won a copy of Alpha Centauri. Tried to install it, didn't work properly, suspected directX conflict with AGP card, tried to reintstall graphics drivers/directX, installation froze halfway through, needed a completely fresh new install of windows ie reinstall over the top didn't work.

I love win98.
