i use protools and i want a sperate sound card that will do midi outside of protools. it has to be able to input midi then have an output i can connect to the protools interface. i currently have an SB audigy for games and stuff. is there any way i can use that for midi? if not what is a good card for midi only, i don't care about audio for that card?

thanks

You can buy a cable that turns the joystick port on the SB into a midi port. I think they are usually around $30.

When you say "MIDI only," do you mean be a MIDI interface? Or a MIDI synth?

i'm willing to buy another sound card if need be. but all i need it for is midi (not audio)...i want to plug my keyboard into the midi port and use some program like battery or reason and NI pro 52(synthesizers and drum machines), then run the output from the soundcard into the input on my protools interface. will this work? and what do i need to make it work? will m audio 24/96 do it, or is there something cheaper, will that cable at zzounds work?

The cable will allow you to plug the MIDI keyboard into the Audigy and play the soft synths or record MIDI into ProTools (or another MIDI sequencer).

Make sure 4Ft is long enough. You may have to buy additional cables if its not.

Yes.

what do i need to make it work?
An 1/8" stereo plug to whatever size your Protools input is.

will m audio 24/96 do it ?
If thats your Protools Input then yes.

will that cable at zzounds work?
Yes

If your programs are Midi sequencers thats all you need.

great ideas, thanks for the help...

but, my sound card doesn't have the joy stick port. it does, however, have a fire wire connection (both sizes). are there any connectors that would work for midi on these?

Well, you learn something new every day. I made an assumption that all SoundBlaster cards had joystick/MIDI ports. Sorry.

Exactly what Audigy card do you have? If it really has no MIDI capability, you might look into something like the M-Audio MIDISport 1x1, which is a USB MIDI interface. Shouldn't break anybody's bank at $39.95.

What Audigy card?. They all are joystick capable. Some have them with an upgrade. Im thinking you already have Midi on it thats possibly useing Mini Dins. Check your documentation on your soundcard on the type of Midi connectors you have (if any) and check the Soundblaster site.

yeah i thought so...

i got the port from a friend and took the computer apart only to find out there's nowhere to connect the expansion card onto the original sound card. i guess the OEM audigy wasn't meant to play midi.

but, the same friend has a usb midi controller. i'll see how that works. if it doesn't then i guess i'll go out and get another sound card.

Where on earth did you get your audigy from? All audigy's should come with the joystick/midi expansion header that plug into the main audigy card. I would take yours back and complain.

it's the OEM version that comes with most pre-built computers (i.e. gateway). it's not a defect, it's just the way the card was built. i took out the card and looked over the whole thing and found no place to plug the joystick adapter into.

It seems very strange that you would have received the joystick bracket, and yet there's no place to connect it. Does your card resemble the diagram below? The joystick bracket is supposed to plug into the header labeled "13" in the diagram.

the joystick bracket came from a friend who has an audigy card and doesn't use it anymore.

i'll check again, but i don't think my card has '13'.

So you don't really have the card pictured in the article you linked to? Then what do you have?

i do have the card in the link. notice how the '13' in your picture is parallel to the back of the card...nocite how there's something similiar perpendicular to the card in the link...that perpendicular one is mine. anyway, i think i'm just gonna go with some sort of usb interface. is there any kind of disadvantage to that?

ps - i'm a kumputer idiot so i might be way off, but i think i'm right.?

If you bought the OEM card the joystick interface comes with it. If you didnt recieve one when you bought the unit then call them up.
The USB should work with the soundcard.
