MIDI Setup Question

Here is my configuration:

StudioLogic 161 contoller MIDI Out -> Delta 1010 MIDI IN
Delta 1010 MIDI Out -> JV-1010 MIDI IN
JV-1010 Audio Out -> Delta 1010 Inputs

In Cakewalk I can trigger the JV-1010 using the 161 just fine. As soon as I exit Cakewalk, no more sounds! My guess is that the Delta 1010 is not "forwarding" MIDI In to MIDI Out.

Is there a configuration issue I am missing? Do I need one of those MIDI patchbays, or whatever?

Thanks!

Okay. After some exploring I discovered that if I reboot the computer, and do NOT launch Cakewalk, then everything works fine.

However, if I launch Cakewalk then exit. The MIDI out on the Delta 1010 no longer responds unless I am in Cakewalk.

Any ideas??

I have Vegas Audio 2.0 which, I think, has been easier to use. Unfortuneately it doesn't do sequencing. Can someone maybe recommend a sequencer and I could get rid of Cakewalk altogether??

Again, thank you!

basicaly, the delta is not letting midi pass "thru" unless there is a software client. does the delta have a midi thru socket?

as for a sequencer? you wanna start using cubase really. more pro. or logic. but cubase is less computer hungry.

Thank you for responding!

No, the Delta 1010 does not have a MIDI Thru. It will forward IN to OUT if I just don't use any software, but how far will that get me :-)

Anyway, I downloaded the demo for Cubase and Logoc Audio. I am finding it a little difficult to use these with my JV-1010. Are there definition files for Cubase (like Cakewalk)?

Thanks, again!

The problem is (as stated) a midi thru seemingly does not exist on your system. (it is highly unlikely that the problem is Cakewalk) Try going to: http://www.technotoys.com/midithruway.htm

Download and install the program. That should give you a midi thru. Be sure to turn it off when you ARE using cakewalk (e.g., don't have it routing your midi signal anywhere or you will wonder why a bunch of tracks are playing when you have only sequenced 1)

As an aside, the newer music program... Cakewalk, Cubase, N-tracks are all good. Try downloading the demos and seeing which ones you like. You may also find that one fits the way you work better than others. If anyone tells you otherwise, they better be your shrink because they are saying they know you better than you know yourself.

Thank you, RJT, for your input as well. Being a MIDI newbie can be a little daunting. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute to the group someday...

It almost seems as though the Delta 1010 driver does a MIDI THRU on its own. However, when I load Cakewalk (or Cubase, or Logic, etc) that MIDI through prevails and then unloads when I quit the program.

Regardless, I'll give that Thruway a try tonight. That seems to be just what I need to get the job done!

yep lunatic,

when you first boot your pc, the delta 1010 also acts as midi thru. i.e any signal present at the input will be copied to the output.

but once you load and exit any program that uses the midi outs or ins on the delta, then that function is shut off.

Very toubling is it not? I myself will try and download midi thruway

Lunatic,

Turn the "local on" your JV1010 when you don't want to play your instrument in a sequencer program. Make sure that you turn it off before going into Cakewalk or make sure that you set Cakewalk to automatically turn your locals off.

Cyan,

Yes it is a little troubling. How'd the ThruWay work out for you?

Landie,

Thanks for the response! So, changing this "locals" setting on the JV-1010 will change how the Delta 1010 handles MIDI? Maybe there is an aspect to MIDI that I don't understand (which is prbably the case), but I wouldn't think it would work that way. I don't see how chamging a setting on the JV-1010 alters how the Delta 1010 works.

I love this group!
