midi record and playback in daw

Hey, Im curious if you can record midi info in ableton from a hardware synth and send info back to synth to play without recording audio.
Ive tried and couldn't get it to happen.....

Yes, Ableton can record MIDI. Your interface will need MIDI in and out jacks to send signal both ways to your synth.
