ok all you fellow sonar users out there. is there any way i can take a midi song like lets say stupify by disturbed and load it into sonar and take just the drum parts from it and seperate each percusion instrument to its own track so i can adjust volumes seperately because whomever makes the midis always puts the drums all on one track, i use live synth pro to add sound fonts.
i have sonar 2.0 xl by the way. i just like to add more punch to the bass drum and somtimes some reverb to the snare and cymbals. im using the bluejay soundfonts that came with sonar, does anyone know of any better sound fonts that have more of a metal sound. thanks ahead of time and god bless. flash

Let's assume stupify by disturbed is available as a MIDI file.

Load the file into Sonar, then in Piano Roll View, open the drum track.

Drag the selection tool to include all of the snare hits (for example).

Ctrl-C (to copy the selection) Ctrl-X (or Delete key if you prefer to delete the selection).

Open a new track.

Ctrl-V at the appropriate position.

That should work. Do that for each of the parts of the drum track until you've got what you want.

Of course, I would just change the velocities for each of the drum instruments - but that would take far longer than the method described above - unless the drum track was just the same four bars repeated ad infinitum. In which case I'd just delete all but the first four bars, change the velocities then copy & paste.

man i wish i could thank you enough my friend, you dont even realize how much time you just saved me. ive been creating as many drums tracks as there are instruments in the drums and going through and erasing all but the instrument for each track lol. what a pain in the butt that is, but wow it realy pays off to have seperate tracks to work with volumes eq and reverb. thanks so much. god bless tim pate

Happy to have been of assistance. :)

There's another solution: open your song, select the drum track and run the call script called "split notes to tracks" (it is installed with Sonar).
