MIDI question

In going through the tutorials that come with Sonar 3 I discovered that I'm unable to hear anything when trying to playback MIDI tracks. I can record and playback audio just fine.

Is this because I don't have an external device connected to my soundcard that can play MIDI tracks?

Seems like I read somewhere that most soundcards have a MIDI synthesizer built in. If so, why don't I hear music?

I'm using the M-Audio audiophile 2496. I've selected 'Delta MIDI' (or something to that effect) as the MIDI output for the tracks I'm trying to play.

You don't hear anything because the Audiophile 2496 does not have a built-in MIDI synth. It does have MIDI connectors on the breakout cable which can be used to connect an external device, though. That's what the "Delta MIDI" (or whatever it's called) device is.
 
drybones, do you have another soundcard in you computer, besides the 2496?

Another option would be a soft-synth like the Virtual Canvas.

This is a set of patches in RAM that play back under MIDI control- supposed to sound like a Roland Sound Canvas. It doesn't but it does make an OK tool to monitor MIDI tracks.

It was a bit hoggish back when Win 95 and P-90s were happening, but a P4 should have no problem spitting it out on time.
