I got a simmons sd9k for christmas and am interested in midi recording with it. if i just use the 1/4 inch output im relle limited with editing, but my interface does not have a midi input. can i somehow plug the midi directly into my laptop, and then will protools recognize it? or does it have to go through the interface? and its protools mpowered. thank you.
 
You'll need some form of MIDI interface to get the MIDI information into the computer. M-Audio still makes the MidiSport, which can be had for very little... MidiSport 1x1 at Sweetwater

Doesn't the sd9k have some sort of USB connectivity? If it does, check the manual. Sometimes the USB connectivity is for audio-only or for software/patch upgrades. If the USB connection carries MIDI, then you might be able to forego the interface and just make the USB connection to the computer.
 
i never thought of that, i'm checking the manual right now, that would make things so much more convenient. thanks.
