Hi,

Is there any substitute for the stupid Microsoft GS SW Synth/Mapper? I would need it, because my Audiophile 9624 doesn't have a GM SoftSynth and because I don't like the sounds of the MS crap. Also my SB Live has pretty bad samples. Where would I found a stand-alone SW Synth (not a VST), so that it would play back all midi files on the computer (also in winamp)?

Thanks,
J. King

Assuming you mean 'S(oft)W(are)' synth, you are probably asking for the wrong thing. You may want a sequencer with built-in sounds, like Fruity Loops. It imports Midi files and exports MP3's for use in Winamp so you'd be covered all the way around.

No, i know fruity loops. i don't need that. I would need something like described above...

Like 'something described above'.

Mmmm hmmm.

Maybe if you ask the same question but try other words, I'll be able to understand better what it is you're looking for.

As far as I can tell, FL fills the bill as 'described above'. If you don't think so, be more specific about what you DO want and I'll try to point you in the right direction.

well, if i for example want to play back a midi file using winamp, it uses the default midi player (MS GS/GM SW Synth or SB!Live). I am looking for an alternative to these two options.

You need another sound-generation source, such as a synth module, audio card like emu, or a soft synth. There are too many to list.

You do know that you can inset a larger, better quality sound set into your SBLive, don't you??? Look around and learn about soundfonts.....

www.soundfont.com

hhmm... can i hijack this for a second? i have no midi playback in any programs, 'cept fruity loops. i use cubase and sibelius, and there's nothing in either of them... could downloading some more soundfonts be the answer? oh, by the way - i'm using a Delta 66...
