Midi on keyboards straight to computer.

If a keyboard I get has a MIDI out, then if I plug it into my computer, will it automatically detect it? And is it possible to record straight onto the computer using the MIDI feature?

I wasn't sure if you needed special software to detect or whatnot or if it's compatible with anything.
