Midi latency greater than Audio... what?

Hi everybody.
I hope I didn't break the rules of this forum. I've already posted this message in another section, but a kind guy who replied to my question suggested to move it right here. Sorry about that.

I'm struggling to make my n-track setup work.
Quick description:
Asus PC Laptop PIV 2.4 MHz, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB 5400 rpm HDD + M-Audio Firewire 410 soundcard. SW= Cubase SX.

Want to make a good laugh?
A friend of mine set it up for me (hey, he runs a nice studio woth lots of digital stuff and is actually making very nice music indeed...) but him first and me afterwards both encoutered a very strange problem (prepare to giggle):
> 100 ms latency on MIDI, yes: MIDI!!! And 5 to 7-8 ms to audio signal. Ah, ah, ahh, ahh!!!

So, the question is: how is this possible? It sounds nonsense to me and I presume to all of us...

Can anybody lend me an hand to sort this crap out?

Thanks a lot -- Marco.

Had you upgraded the drivers and made sure all the connections were selected correctly in n-track?

Yes, I think so. I'm not sure about the correct configuration of Cubase (default.all file), but the studio owner says that'is all fine. Even him can't figure this problem out...

Thanks, still "waiting", still dreaming...
