Iv'e been messing around with AL for a few months. I find it to be extremely difficult. I have watched plenty of videos and read up on things. I found out you need a MIDI in order to have a piano roll. I have a Casio-2100 keyboard. It hooks up to my laptop (windows) through a USB cord. I tried to research how to use it for MIDI. I turned on the keyboard before opening AL, but after that I have no clue where to go.

Can anyone explain to me step by step how to get started using MIDI? Do you have to change the preferences or anything?

you do not need a midi controller to use the piano roll..highlight an area in the midi track and right click your mouse..then click on "insert midi clip" and there you are, piano roll

then you can just use your mouse, you can even use the keyboard of your computer to play the notes if you want

but if you are using a midi controller you need to go into Options > Preferences > Midi sync, then go down to Midi ports and switch "Track" ON with the USB port your casio is going through

remember that with most casio's etc you need to disable their sounds when just using them as a controller
