I have an old midi keyboard pretty much still in new condition (Studiologic SL-161) that I'd like to use for notation via Sibelius 7.5. I have a high spec laptop that uses a generic on-board sound chip. Before rushing out to buy a USB midi keyboard, I think I could continue to use the Studiologic keyboard if I purchase an external sound card with Midi inputs.
My guess is that the sound card can be used to generate the sounds (via additional amp/speakers) directly from the Midi input with very little latency and that Sibelius will pick up the midi signals and lay down the notes using the keyboard / external card as direct input. The quality of the sound doesn't matter that much because it's never going to be used for recording/performance, just audible feedback during input.
Thanks,
Ric

- will the studiologic still cut it?
- have I got the basics right?
- if so, is there a particular kind of sound card I should be looking for?
Thanks,
