i bought an oxygen 49 hoping that i could program it for protools 6.4...didtn happen..(by the way if anybody has done that send me the enigma file)

so now im stuck with this controller and i want to start recording midi..well apparently for protools you have to buy a bunch of instruments and i dont even have enough money for fxpansion to use free vst..so...is there any free midi recording softwares (for mac) that can use free vst instruments?

Let's take this one step at a time.

What were you hoping to control in protools?

With an Oxygen 49 keyboard you can control instruments traditionally played on the keyboard like piano and organ, and also use it to program drum parts and bass lines and even guitar parts. If you were looking to automate mixes, the 9 sliders should get you going, the knobs could be connected to eq's or pan controls and the switches could be track mutes or solos.

Garage Band probably came with your Mac when it was new, but it won't host VST or AU plugins. Other than that I don't know of anything free.

Let's see.

You come to this board and post a question and four hours later you give up, throw up your hands and bemoan the uselessness of the subject of the question.

You read some stuff that you didn't read all of because you didn't need to and then when they mentioned something about something you'd never heard of before you gave up.

You're college material son. Natural born and bred...

Take a step back and learn something about midi Continuous Controllers. You may be surprised at how easy they are to apply to your situation.

Here's a link to a recently updated web site --- LINK --- that gives a good overview of midi basics. Stop with the basics on that site --- there's a 'Continuous Controllers' article that's poorly written and has some outright wrong information in it.

And you're wrong - you ARE collage material. You just don't know it yet...

I like collages. I made one at one time consisting of autumn leaves and photos I'd taken.

elicantu: Midi is cool once you can grasp the concept. I got into doing midi stuff when I was like 17 or 18. Yamaha DX7, sequencers, drum machines all that fun stuff that a young guy really loved in the late 80's. :D

Sounds like you may have jumped into something specifically related to using the controller with Protools? If so, you need to start with the basics of midi. I'd start by using the link ssscientist provided. Do some reading.

Can't help you in regards to free software for the Mac.
