midi in doesn´t work

I have a Yamaha cs2x. I use it with cubase 3.7. Sending midi data to the sequencer is ok, but, when I want to use data from the sequencer to use the sounds in the Yamaha I get nothing. Any hints? The Yamaha instruction manuel says little about midi. I use standard din jacks for midi in and out. Thanks

MIDI devices have send and receive channels. You probably know that a MIDI cable transmits on 16 channels. If the sending device is set to transmit on channel 1 but the receiving device is set to receive on channel 2 - the units can't talk.

Also devices have different "modes" (omni mode, multi mode, etc.) which determines if the device can receive 16 different signals on 16 channels at once. Example - Piano on channel 1, bass on channel 2, drums on channel 10 (drums are almost always assigned to 10).
