I understand the concept behind midi but am unfamiliar with the "tools."
If you want to add a recorded sample, or whatever, to an existing recording do you use a sequencer or a sampler to make sure they are in sync with one another?
Please help...I'm an idiot.

First off, is the "existing recording" an audio recording or a MIDI sequence, or both, like a typical project file from any of the modern software recording applications like Cubase, SONAR, Logic, etc.?

There's a couple of ways to add audio events to an existing sequence. One way is to load the audio into a sampler, which is a MIDI instrument that can be loaded up with custom samples. Then you would simply trigger the sampler appropriately from the right point in the sequence. Of course, this method requires a sampler.

These days you can record audio tracks right into most software recording packages that co-exist with MIDI tracks, so you can simply record the event in an audio track at the appropriate time.

With either method you can always change the start time of the event.

Ok...the recorded music is a midi sequence and an audio recording. It sounds like I need a sampler.
What I want to do is just take samples of music, sounds, etc. and just be able to add them to my recorded music but be in sync.
So is a sampler correct equipment for that?

Re-read what I wrote, I already answered.

If what you already have is a project file with MIDI and audio data, all you have to do is put the samples where you want them in the timeline like any other audio data. You only really need a sampler if you want to be able to play the sounds via a MIDI keyboard.
