Midi Guitars...has anybody used any?

I've been looking at some guitars that put out MIDI data, most notably the Brian Moore midi-axe/i-guitar series and the old, obsolete Casio MG-510. Has anybody used any of these guitars to do any MIDI input for sequencing? The standard MIDI 5-pin options is the one I prefer, but any input on how well any type would work is greatly appreciated!
 
i have a yamaha G10, it rocks, and I use it all the time. Most of the time I forget that the sound is not coming from the guitar and can do some CRAZY shit with it. You will need a 6 part multitimerbal synth for it to really shine
 
I have some softsynths that came with Cakewalk home studio 4 XL. I can trigger them from the MIDI input throught the sequencing software. I just bought a Casio MG-510 on eBay and it should be arriving next week. I really wanted the guitar as an input device since I don't know how to play keyboard. I've also been looking at some synth modules on eBay, but my budget would only allow some of the older, cheaper, fake sounding boxes. I'll just keep looking I guess!
 
I not familiar with that one but mine sends on 6 midi channels at once so I use a 8 part multitimberal synth (TX802) for it. Generally, there is so much data be sent that each string needs its own midi channel. Same thing would apply to plugins
 
G-707 / Gr-700

Got a old G-707 Roland guitar and GR-700 synth board for it. :D

Transmits on midi ch-1 only . :o

Picked it up cheap and rebuilt it.... I'm not much of a player.

But i have fun with it seemes I always drift from playing to getting under the hood. :p

Nice. Theres one up on ebay for like 750. My G10 is all crazy looking like that, too bad they never really caught on

You should look for a pg200 programmer for that gr700

Yes Midi guitars were pushed alot in the 80's your G10 is cool looking. :cool: :cool:


did see a pg 200 on e-bay but was bidding on it then the price just shot up from 150 to 600 over night :eek:

but you can program it from the guitar its self. :cool: just takes a little longer thats all :p

im happy with that.
 
Also, there are plenty of software programmers (midiquest, sound diver) that will do it too. The GR700 is similar to the junos of those days
 
I just sold my old Roland GR50 in favor of a Yamaha EX guitar. I use it only as a midi controller in Sonar and it tracks really well for about $200
 
I use a strat w/ GK-2. I use that to drive a GI-10, from there to a freestanding sequencer/filer (roland). For modules, , Roland U-110 and a JV880, also a DR-5 , and a PMA-? Using Guitar to write string parts is cooler than a keyboard because you can spread the chord voicing wider. I would appreciate any info/recommendations on MIDI sequencing software. I have a Yamaha AW2816, which I love . This provides audio tracks. I think it would be a lot easier to edit the MIDI files w/ a graphic display.

I'm a Cakewalk/Sonar guy from way back. At a beginner level, or any level for that matter, you can't get a better midi education from anywhere than buying a copy of Cakewalk/Sonar Home Studio. The interface is easy, is audio supported, and there's so many templates and instrument definitions it'll make your head spin. I still think it's the best sequencing/audio app on the planet.
 
Go for the orginal Midi sequencer, Cubase

or logic if on a mac

Both have extremely DEEP midi implementations

I plan on using my MG-510 with Cakewalk Home Studio 4XL. I've been very happy with the sequencing capabilities so far. The Casio is slated to arrive on Wednesday! Can't wait. It's got EMG pickups on it that I do not believe are stock. Picked it up on eBay...wasn't cheap.

If anybody is interested, there is a beautiful Brian Moore i81 on eBay. I was the high bidder on a previous auction, but didn't meet the reserve price. The guy selling gave me a second chance offer for $405, but he wouldn't return any of my messages so I passed. Too bad...it's a beautiful axe.
