MIDI drums not matching up

I'm just wondering if my MIDI drums are set up correctly. I am going through a book all about programming beats and it uses the GM channel 10 for the drums. I think this is just for ease of everyone definitely having these drum sounds on their computer. I've gone through a couple of chapters and everything is fine but on this picture, it shows a set up of the drums like in the attachment I have provided.

In this book it they have renamed A0 as Kick 3 and use it for a kick drum. A0 on mine is a rim shot. D#-1 they use as a Hi-Q (a zapp sound) yet mine makes no noise whatsoever. This also is the case for C0 but it uses that in this particular beat. I'm just wondering if I have my drums set up wrong somehow and I can rectify this. Does anyone know anything that can point me in the right direction?

You dont have to use the standard GM mapping for anything. It just makes it easier to hop around between devices where each note will match up to the same instrument

So what would you recommend me do? I only have the LM-7. I'm torn between Guru & Battery but money is a bit tight at the minute so I have no option but to use the GM map. Although I could rewire Reason into it I suppose and use my vast array of samples I have.

If you are going software and sampler, it really wont make a huge difference. I have 2 drum machines that are mapped GM style and a sampler which is mapped quasi GM but also has a number of other sounds mapped across the keyrange (percussion etc). For me, it is convenient to be able to switch machines and still have the sounds mapped to the same instruments so I can hear the same beat just played on a different machine. If you stick to one machine, it makes no difference at all since you wont have to worry about different devices and you can map to whatever you want. There is also a third option, use drum maps. These allow you to map any incoming midi note to any other midi note so you will be able to have the same note (i.e. C0 for kick) always map to the kick regardless of its default mapping.

If you are looking for a software drum machine / sampler, I REALLY like the Linplug RMIV (http://www.linplug.com/) it has pads ala MPC where you can assign samples or any of it's analog model sounds. It is half the price of battery and is rock solid

Thanks for the info. I've downloaded the RM IV demo to take a look at tomorrow. £85 quid isn't a bad price either if it's as solid as you say.
