hello everyone.

i apologize if this is a basic midi question, but here goes:

I have Cool Edit pro 2.0, and am wondering what people would recommend i do for recording drums midi-style using my yamaha keyboard.

I own Reason and Fruity Loops, and want to play the drums live multi-track along with the click. I do NOT want to loop.

any recommendations would help.

You're looking to do MIDI sequencing. I don't believe Cool Edit will record MIDI sequences, but I'm sure Reason does (I'm not too familiar with it, but I can't imagine it wouldn't).

Step 1 is establishing a MIDI connection to your computer (i.e. a cable). Once you've done that, it should be fairly painless.

If you've got a "regular" consumer sound card, you'll probably need the cable that connects to your game port. Any music store will have one.

so i should be able to sync up to Reason, and record a straight live WAV that i can then export to Cool Edit, etc?

thanks!

If you're just looking to record the audio of what you play with your keyboard, that's easy. No MIDI required, and you can use Cool Edit for that. Stereo cable from your keyboard to the LINE IN jack of your sound card. Just check levels and record.

When you say "MIDI style", that sounds like you're looking to record the performance information as MIDI, then use Reason's drum set to play them back (which you can also do, just a bit more involved)

yes, that is what i'm asking. i want to play live (multi-track with cool edit) while midi sync'd up to Reason.

this is possible?

so sequencing one straight live 4 minute track wouldn't be that difficult?

i'm a drummer, and have pretty specific difficult parts that would be tough to loop.

thanks!
