Hi, I'm new to home recording, and I hope you can help me.
I'm trying to set up a spare-room studio for recording demos of my music. Of course, I'd like the quality to be as good as possible even though they're demos.
Equipment I have is a PC with Emagic Logic 5, a SoundMAX Digital Audio soundcard, various guitars, etc which I have managed to record fairly well with line inputs and amp simulators, and a Behringer UB808 mixer.
I also have a Yamaha Portatone keyboard with MIDI and General MIDI, which I haven't connected up to the PC yet.
I'm not going to be doing loads of MIDI recording, but some piano maybe, some sound effects and mostly drums.
As it is, the keyboard I have is too large for my small space. I was thinking of selling it and getting something like an Evolution Ekeys, M Audio Oxygen 8 or Evolution MK 425C MIDI controller.
The problem is I then need synth sounds, etc. A friend told me that my soundcard may contain some sounds and, after checking the manufacturer, it seems it is supposed to contain Roland GM sounds plus some others.
If I decide that these sounds are good enough (and I don't think they have many drums) can I get some more sounds which I can then use?
Do I need a MIDI controller or can I input the notes some othe way (I have tried step recording and it's too laborious and tricky).
The quality doesn't need to be that good, but a good number of different sounds would be nice, and if I can get away with less hardware, all the better.
