i want to keep as much of my setup away from my computer as possible (because i find i spend way too much on the computer at work!), so i have a tascam 8 track and record guitars through a mic. id really like to add some keys and other samples (strings etc) to my music. a friend has lent me a keyboard to record with indefinitely.
its a full on midi keyboard, so no audio out. all i want to do is get the thing to play some samples that i load in!

ive asked a few friends, they say download cubase or protools or other software but everything ive tried just seems really complicated to sort out. apparently i need an interface to deal with latency and i need software. i dont mind looking for software download, bit i just dont have the money to spend on an interface. ive tried downloading a few bits of software but again it just seems really complicated.
can anyone recopmmend anything that will get this thing going ?
do absolutely need an interface ?
any lightweight software out there ? (my computer is pretty old)
any help suggestions really appreciated
thanks in advance
