midi channel questions

I'm running some digital triggers into an alesis dm5 drum module, the taking the midi out into my computer (via sblive) and either using it to trigger soundfonts (for rehearsals) or recording the midi info in sonar for when I'm recording. Before mixing down I'd like to record the actual audio of the drums on seperate channels into protools.

My question is that the midi info is apparently all on one channel. I'd like to be able to see a mixer in sonar that for ex: has kick on one channel, snare on other, etc etc.

Since the sound fonts are programmed that a c is kick, c# is snare etc, can I change the individual volumes? I've wouldn't think in any other instrument, like piano you would want to make certain notes louder than others.

I hope this makes sense. If someone can help me I'd REALLY appreciate it.

There is a CAL program (macro) in SONAR called Split Notes to Tracks. Run that against your drum tracks and you get a separate track for each part of the kit.

You can always change the individual volumes -- MIDI velocity -- of individual note events, for any MIDI track. (Some older or cheap synths won't respond to differences in velocity, though.) In SONAR you can use the filter editing to change all the volumes of, say, just the C#'s in the track... but of course if you split them out to indiviual tracks it's a moot point.

I disagree in general with your comment about other instruments, though, especially piano -- every finger hits a key with a slightly different amount of force -- the variation of volume in individual notes is what makes a piano a piano.

This does not seem to be working.
I am trying to split my drum track into many other tracks. But when I run the "split channel" ,cal program it simply puts all 16 trakcs. These tracks are emtpy. One only one channel gets the same data as the original. Any suggestions?

Nevermind, I had to use "split note to tracks" instaed.
It now gives me 16 channels. Is there a way to minimize this splitting to only about 4 tracks instead of 16?
