I'm starting a home studio. What additional equipment do I need to start off? I have so far a multitrack 4 track recorder, a 12 ch mixer and a DR-5. Honestly, do I need any more equipment?

Help! email@ b_face1_99@yahoo.com

What instruments are you planning to record?

What is the intended purpose of your recordings?

What type or types of music will you be recording?

I play the keyboard and my studio has over 250 instuments. So.., overall I use my keyboard to play any of the 250. I make anything from rock, r&b, salsa, hiphop and techno. I want to start recording guys who want to make a cd to advertise. I can compose almost any type of music. Please give me some info.

Thanks for replying

If you want to get paid you will need more tracks 16-24, maybe a bigger mixer, and at least one mic but probably several.

Then theres preamps, effects, cables, monitors, CD Burner... and much much more!

I also have a roland effect processor, 3 professional mics, one preamp, four monitors w/subs and cd burner. How much of a investment should I make into equipment without spending over $20,000 for the big league stuff?

You need to tell us the exact models of your gear if you want evaluations.

But to be honest the quality of gear is secondary to your ability to use it. If your a recording prodigy then you can make amazing stuff with a bunch of radio shack gear. If you dont have a clue than no amount of great gear will help.

It sounds like you have a good start, though.

You want to actually have people pay you to record them when you only have a 4 track? Dude, any one can buy a 4 track from Musicians friend for $200. You need something bigger just for shear principal :D

Seriously though... Have you considered recording on a computer? It makes things so much easier. It also impresses people when you tell them you have unlimited tracks. "ohhhhhhhh - Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh."

Are you going to be micing instruments? Have you given your room any thought? Do you need some good studio foam for the walls to cut down slap echo?

thanks for the reply. I got a suggestion to buy a 4 track recorder. I'm currently doing computer base recording with cakewalk. Honestly I thought that I didn't need a recorder. As of right now I only have a dr-5, vpr vocalist performer, boss groove machine and yamaha keyboard. Ohhhhhhhhhh and of course cakewalk.
