The Fostex marks my initial foray into digital recording after decades of daily analog tape recording on multi-track machines. Needless to say, this is a brave new world. I'm done with tape transports and tape hiss.
This VF-16 is new to me, however, I have successfully recorded several 1.5 hour concerts and edited them somewhat. Today I ran out of room and I don't want to erase an entire program. To free up space, I attempted unsuccessfully to erase a 15-minute section on all tracks in the middle of the program I'm working with. I can't figure out why the section doesn't disappear. The manual says to use the punch in and punch out keys to demarcate the beginning and ending of the erase point, but nothing is subsequently erased. Here is the sequence of my actions:
1. Find the beginning point of the section I want to erase in my program.
2. Press Punch In.
3. Press stop.
4. Fast forward to the ending point of my to-be-erased section.
5. Press Punch Out.
6. Press stop.
7. Press Edit and choose erase.
8. Select my tracks to be erased, which all impressively flash red.
9. Press Enter/Yes.
10. Press Enter/Yes again saying I am indeed "sure."
11. Watch as some phantom erasure action takes place: looks convincing.
12. Check to see if my section is erased and wonder why it is still there.
This is essentually the way the manual says to do this function: the manual says "Set the starting point to erase to the [AUTO PUNCH IN] key, and the ending point to the [Auto Punch Out key]." No details are given as how to navigate between those two loci. I naturally used the fast forward function.
When I press the key to erase, the readout says: A/P IN<->OUT which seems to indicate that, despite my efforts at selecting the beginning and ending of the proposed erased section, I have selected exactly no content to be erased.
How do I erase a selected section in the middle of a program on the VF-16?
I will appreciate any advice from longtime users.
