I'm kind of embarrassed to ask this. I have a dynamic Kustom mic that I got with a cable for $40. I am thinking of getting a SM-57 but I am not good enough at recording or interested in recording an album, should I buy it? Will it really make that much difference?

it will make some difference....your entire chain is a factor (preamp, recorder,etc).....if this is just a hobby, the Kustom mic will be fine.....

at some point as you get more into recording and get better at it, you may see limitations in your gear....from there you will become what we call a "gear slut"....from there you will say things like"I only have 2 sm57's?...whats up with that..im off to Guitar Center"....

Yep, made the 1 1/2 hour trip to Guitar Center last night only to get there 1/2 hour after closing....good thing they cater to gear sluts (but suck at salespeople)...i left with 2 Joe Meek VC3Q's......
