Mics that were a disappointment

My biggest disappointment so far has been the Heil PR35. It really surprised me how it could sound so good on some voices and so bad on others. Never experienced that much variation with any other mic.

Won't try to quantify it like that but I totally get that. On one it can sound clear and perfect, next it shrill as can be. It's as if (and I haven't tried to identify it) a sharp peak, that some voices don't hit', others- wow!

Have a foam booty handy too..

I can't think of any right now. But I got 2 audix d2's and a D6 for a little over 200 on ebay. The package was stolen from my door. That was a dissapointment

My D112 became a disappointment after I got a Beta 52 three years later.

The same could be said about any microphone, even ones costing thousands of dollars.

Funny you should mention the PR35 though, Tomm. I tried one as soon as they were out and it never left the store with me. I can half remember that the handling noise was very high too!

Yes Henry, handling noise was quite a surprise. I understand some folks like them on guitar cabs for that reason.

It seems to me to be a bit more here than a mic not finessing a particular vocal quite right.
We have two here and I'd always pick (or try) either the 35 -with foam boot, or RE20 for live' rehearsal/tracking duty. For a comparison everyone seem to sound like 'them' + the RE20. '35s there seems to be fairly big shifts re making a decent fit'.
Granted the 20 is a lot flatter, what push it does have subtler I suppose, and quite a bit above that gotcha' zone (5-6k?)

Yes, I'm talking about a mic that was an utter disappointment beyond the normal "doesn't work for this" sort of application. My experience with the PR35 falls into this catagory. It sounded quite nice on a couple of voices but on others it was like something went terribly wrong. I sold my pair off as I have other mics that sound better and are not so finicky.
