Linux Man...
I am looking for a couple of condensor mics that can take greater than 130db for recording. I want them for drums, guitars, and basically anything else.

I have been lookiing at

A) MXL 1003
B) MXL 2003

I don't know what other ones to really for right now. I would like to get a pair for about 200$, so that does put some limitations on it. 300$ absolute max. I think studio projects would be something to look into and possibly Rode.

Any opinions on the 1003 and 2003?

Audio Technica 4033 can take that easy. It'll handle 145dB and 155dB with the 10dB attenuator engaged.

the specs on that Marshall MXL 2003 say it can take 140db with the 10db pad......

its a damn good mic and $149 is a bargain......

at3035. Not sure how good it would be for your application but for the price it has one of the highest SPL ratings I've seen.

If you find them at $200-$300 a pair, I'll take a half-dozen! ;)

But, seriously, trackrat, in practise I've found that the 10db pad on the 4033 is sometimes not enough for close mic'ing really loud sources like toms. I get distortion. Have you had better luck in practise, or are you just judging from the printed specs? The 20db pad on the 414 seems to work a lot better, but of course, you're not going to find two of those for $300 either.

I guess the lesson to buyers here is don't just go by specs - you may have to actually try them to be sure.
