I've done a ton of searching on this forum on the subject of inexpensive mics and pres. Here's the question I'm still wondering about:

Am I better off spending around $400.00 on:

MXL 603 (pair) + DMP3 pre

or

a pair of better mics w/o any pre?

I'm going to get some all in one budget DAW, and be recording primarily acoustic guitar music with some vocals here and there. I think I do want a pair of mics to do stereo recording of my acoustic(s).

Thanks!

Based on what I've read in this forum, and my experience with cheap-built-in mic pre's, I'd say definitly get the 603's and the DMP3

Thanks, that reaffirms that pres are "as important" as mics, at least at the budget level.

I think the 603s/DMP-3 combo is a good one. However....

Are you going to be recording many vocals? If you are, you might want at least one large-diaphram condenser. The 603Ss are small-diaphram, and while they can work on vocals they may not be your best choice.

There are many low-cost LDC mics around: MXL V67, the Studio Projects B1, the AT 3035, Rode NT1a.

Plus, many will hasten to add, some good dynamic mics can also do the job on vocals, particularly Shure 57 or 58.

Just some thoughts. I think the 603Ss do quite well on guitar, especialy in stereo.

Thanks, Fab. I won't be doing any vocals myself, but may have others fill in occasionally. I do have access to a SM57 beta, so that may be the way to go for now. My main focus is acoustic guitar(s).
