i was wanting to get some suggestions on a good pre amp for my delta 1010 card. i will need four imputs and i also suggestions on a good lead mic which will be used for vocals only and backup mics(i was thinking the sm57's). any help would be greatly appreciated and im not trying to break the bank. i guess my budget would be about 300 for the mixer and 400 for the mics. i guess another question would be could i get away with one mic and recording the lead vocal and then come back and record background.

thanks

Scip the mixer and do the following:

* 1 m-audio audio buddy, $100 for 2-channels, and use this for any dynamic mics you might have.

* 1 m-audio dmp3, $200 for two channels, and use this for your condenser mics.

* 1 Octava MC012 with Lomo head, about $400. The reason I say the Octava is because I have heard the Lomo kicks some serious ass as a vocal mic. And because it's the most versatile mic I can think of. Change the capsule, and it's a small-diaphgragm cond. great for drum overhead and acc. guitar. Change it again and it's a big, vintage-sounding vocal mic. Yet again, and you have an omni-directional for room embience. You may never need another mic.

i went with 2 DMP3's at $189

1 Marshall mxlv67 @129

2-3 cheaper Marshall mics, mxl1006, mxl603's......

It's just that, instead of needing one of these mics, you'll probably need at least three!:)

(2 for overheads and one for a room mic when you're recording drums)

another suggestion

YEah, I too second the DMP-3 thing!
Mics: how 'bout:
- 1x SM57 $75
- 1x Behringer B1 or StudioProjects B1 $99
- 2x Behringer ECM8000's $70 total
Total amount: $244 for 4 mics!

Then you got 4 fine mics, for vocals (B1, backgroundvocs:SM57), for drumoverheads: ecm8000, for electric guitar: sm57 close miced, b1 room miked), acoustic guitar: b1 or xy-ecm8000's, snare drum: sm57.

With the $150 left you could go for an extra Audiobuddy (next to the DMP-3, or buy one o' dem Oktava mics. Or, if you need to record a lot of drums, buy an AKG D112 (for the kick drum and maybe bassguitar). Or buy a DI box from Behringer (active DI100).

I'm not selling Behringer, but from all the ravings I hear, the above mentioned B-stuff have proved themselves here and there. Ask Harvey!

these mics and pres are for vocals only....

The Lomo head is supposed to be outstanding for that . . . and just in case he should need it for anything else, he can take the cap off and it's a great guitar or drum overhead mic.

I fully expect Oktava to come out with a special head that can be used for chopping vegetables, as well.

chessrock, sorry i didnt specify who the comment was for.....

speeddemon was recommending mics for guitar and drums and he had stated it was only for vocals.....
