I am starting a small home studio and I need some advice, so what better place to come than here. We are going to be doing straight to harddrive recording through a Mackie 1604 Mixer into a MOTU 2408 MKII. We have a pretty low budget, and was thinking that we could mostly use Shure SM57's for drums and recording amps and such, but are those also good for Vocals? If you have any suggestions, please respond. Keep in mind we have a low budget, enough for 8 shure's. Thanks.

57s will get you by with vocals, but i've heard much better mics for vocals then the 57. look into the marshall mxl2001 mic. i have not heard it but they say that it's a great mic and it's only $100. and 57s kill on the snare,toms,hi-hat,amps but you may want a better mic on the kick. i use a shure beta 52 on my kick and it sounds great. of you can look at the akg d112. (beta:$180)
(akg:$200)

good luck.

Not sure about the mxl 2001. I've heard that if you get it modded, it can sound pretty damn nice, though.

57's should be just fine for vocals if you're on a tight budget. Just get yourself a good pop screen.

my current bottom feeder mic favorites....

Marshall mxl603'2 - get a pair...works for overheads very well and great for acoustic guitars

Behringer ECM800s - get a pair....

Shure sm57 - great on snare and guitar amps and lots of other things.....get 3.....

AT ATMPRO 25 - for kick drum...get 1

Marshall MXLv93M or v67...get 1...great for vocals

8 shures goes for about $640.......you can get the above for about the same price and there isnt much you couldnt mic VERY WELL....alot better than Shure 57's only......

I'm sorry, but except for use as a color mic, it's basically a piece of junk........ yes, you can mod it, but there so many other better options out there that going thru the trouble of mod'ing it isn't really worth it!

Ditto on the 2001...unless you're budgeting for an impressive looking doorstop, or unless Stephen Paul owes you a BIG favor...There are other iterations of the 2001 being sold by Behringer, ADK, Nady, Cascade, Pacific, etc...they all pretty much fall into the same recommendation level as the 2001.

Check out the Marshall v67 and v93M as Gidge recommended. You might also want to look at the Studio Projects B1 and B3 (at $79 and $149, respectively).

Good luck!

Yep, without a doubt, "Gidge" just put together a great mic locker for you! Get exactly what he said.
