I'm driving my wife and kids nuts!!! For the pasts 36 hours been either surfing the net, or down at the local music shop looking for answers on condenser mic's (for vocals). Here's the final four.

AKG 4000B
AT-4050/CM5
RODE NT-2
OKTAVA MC012/RTTM1 (sound room only)

You guys/gals are the pros!!! You've heard hundreds of mic's. I'll go with your decision. Also as many of you have suggested, I'll pickup a ART tube preamp. Thanks

I have not heard the 4000B myself. And only know one person who has one; he's from this BBS, but don't remember his name, and he likes it. But haven't heard anything else about it, good or bad.

I've heard plenty of different 4050s and NT-2s; and they're both nice mics, just as you'd expect.

But neither the 4050 or NT-2 made me say "Wow. I can't believe that's coming out of that mic!" like the MC012/M1 did. If you didn't know it only cost $500US, you'd think it would cost a lot more when comparing it to other mics in its price range.

The only other mic I like AS MUCH as the MC012/M1 (in it's price range) is the AT4047; which is really a different monster in my opinion considering the 4047 doesn't have that exaggerated high-end like almost all of the other mics in its price range.

Just so you don't get the wrong idea from me, high-end exaggeration is NOT a bad thing. In fact, it's a very desired thing most of the time. That's why I'd recommend a mic with that type of character if it's going to be a "general purpose", "all-around", "work-horse" large diaphragm mic. And MOST of the time for a "vocal-specific", "work-horse" large diaphragm mic.

Let us know what you end up doing.

And there he is!...

And his opinion is "the C4000B does sound much better than the NT2."

Do you have a music shop around you which carries one or any of your selected "Fab-Four" mic considerations?

If so, you might want to purchase an MC012/M1, do some comparisons at the local shop with it and then decide what you like the "best". The Sound Rooms Return Policy is: Don't return it BEFORE 20 days after purchase date. This is Taylor Johnson's way of encouraging you to do comparisions and really use the mic before making the final decision.

I sometimes feel like people go into their local music shop to see what mics they have their for future mic comparisions with another mic which they don't carry. Then just end up buying a mic from their local music store (which I don't recommend very often do to better prices elsewhere; though some like the comfortability of local purchases) because some little "sales weasel" (there's at least one in every company) discouraged them from doing comparisions (and sometimes it's not even disguised). Anyone who you'd even want to do business would recommend and suggest doing comparisions.

The only one they have in stock is the NT-2. I'll take your advise and go with one of your choices, the AT4047. It's $495 at 8th Street....just what I wanted, under $500. As I said before, I'll get the ART DUAL MP at the same time. Anybody having problems like RAJ with this unit?

RE, thanks for your help!
