Right. Let's compare apples

How do the current range of Western Neumanns stand up to their Eastern cousins?

I pulled the following from a post I made a while back. Perhaps this will get the discussion going.

"Interesting question. There are certainly mics between the two companies that are similar, yet different, and there are mics that are rather different. Here's my thoughts on mics that are somewhat similar (though still different):

Neumann TLM103 - Gefell M930
Neumann TLM170 - Gefell UMT800
Neumann U89 - Gefell M70s
Neumann KM184 - Gefell M300
Neumann M147 - Gefell M990 (or M92.1s)
Neumann M149 - Gefell UM 92.1s (or UM900)

Other copmparisons might be made."

I've used U87s here and there

but I bought Gefell UMT70s

better capsules, better sound, better build quality, and less money

why buy a Sennheiser "Neumann" when you can get a real Neumann?

Agreed. I've used the TLM 103 but I ended up buying the Gefell M930.

Interesting. Do Neumann actually EVER come out on top in any head to head comparisons with other German manufacturers? I can't imagine them beating out Schoeps and Brauner, somehow. Although they probably have the edge over MBHO.

And akg :)

Neumann and Gefell both make very good mics with different approaches. There's some info on Gefell's compared to Neumann's at http://www.gefell-mics.com/q_and_a.htm

I wouldn't even compare Neumann [ or Gefell ] directly to Schoeps or Brauner, as the companies are making very different-sounding microphones from each other.
