I think the D-series are pretty damn average. The OM series, however, are damn fine!

Have any suggestions on drum mics. Am recording digitally with a Rpland VS-1889?

Very bright sounding mics in my opinion.

I have had overall better luck using Shure SM-57's on guitar speaker cabinets, snare drums, drum "tom's", percussion, and brass instrument (when condensors were not available).

Choose wisely here. You have HEARD the SM-57 on far more outstanding recordings then the Audix D series mics. History has a way of repeating itself....;)

The Sennheiser 604s I've heard are excellent, but pretty spendy ($150 each).

Something to think about

sennheiser

Actually, I've seen e604s go for 3 @ $300. Also, they come built in with nifty clips so you don't have to buy 3 $30 LP claws or anything. I've never heard how they sound, but it sounds like something to check out because it's around the same price as 3 57's plus clips.

Hope this helps,
Eric
