Microphone wrong choice??

I recently bought the Baby Blue microphone...and i cant tell a huge difference on it sounding like my macs built in microphone :S i dont know if its just me or if people know for a fact this microphone has had many bad reviews?? any suggestions of a mic i could replace it with???
 
If you're talking about the mic I think you're talking about (link please...) then it's just you... or rather how you're using it.

Provide some details of your set up and what you're trying to record and people will be able to help you..
 
Often, part of the reason there's such an abundance of sarcasm on these pages is due to the lack of detail that posters give. Those with knowledge aren't typically wondrous when it comes to mind reading.......
 
Ok I have it with the ball on top and it is n XLR plugged into a Tascam audio interface which then plugs into my mac through USB. I dont know if its the fact i dont know how to use the right EQ for voices and compression etc so i may read up a few books on that...but i think it may just be my knowledge (or lack of) recording techniques...can any book be requested on recording and also editing recordings...comrpession etc.

I presume you *are* using it side-fire and know which is the front and which is the back?
 
What is side fire..and yes the front is where the "Blue" tag is

I see a large kazoo in your future ........... that is all the crystal has gone blank.
 
Yeah there's something really wrong with your setup, or you have a defective mic. Those baby mics are reeealy nice mics. I'd start by saying check your gains, turn off all compression, and flatten your eq. How high are your peaks when you're tracking?
 
How should my set up be?? And what should my gain etc be??
 
If the new recordings (after you acquired the Baby Blue) sounds the same as the old recordings with the built in Macmic, may i suggest that you should check your DAWs / interface / whatevers connections inside the Mac? See if you still have the macs built in mic selected as recording device. I've made this mistake sometimes myself. :)
 
I thought the BB was great on piano, cello, room, instrumental vocal, etc. But as a straight-up vocal mic for the typical vocalist? I'll pass...

THAT SAID -- Are you sure you're using the mic and NOT the built-in mic on your Mac...?
 
Yes im sure i checked many times and its definitely the baby bottle mic
 
Did you say vocal? What is your setup? Are you using a pop filter? Any room treatment? Or porta-treatment (vocal booth / reflexion filter). Large room, small room? Carpet, tile, wood? There's more at play than just the mic. Having a good mic in and of itself is not going to make your space sound like carnegie hall (whatever that sounds like). Are you 6mm from the mic, or 6" or 6' or ??? Too many unknowns.

What exactly in your words do you NOT like about what you're currently getting? Which is half the battle IMO, and not just because of that cartoon show. Once you know what's wrong with it, you can address with a better suited mic or steps in post to edit to taste. Plus various non-mic upgrades to put things right.

Side fire means you sing into the side, the grill, not the end like you would a conventional dynamic vocal mic like an SM58. I'm thinking if it sounds like the Mac's built in mics, then that's what you're actually recording on. Even defective, or especially so, there should be a big difference between the Blue and the built in's.
