I am recording some vocal stuff for a cd using a creative sound card on a computer using the program acoustica mixcraft. The condenser microphone is hooked up through XLR cables to a "S-Phantom" adapter, since I can't afford a mixer. I had some trouble with the Samson C01 microphone, it worked perfectly for a while and souded great, but then it randomly stoped being as loud as it was before. I am wondering if the problem could have been that the mic levels were up too high when I plugged it in this time? I sent it back to get repaired and they are sending me a new one. Is there anything I should do differently specifically to help stop this from happening to me again?

One thing you'll always want to do is make certain that the condenser mic is connected to the mic cable before you turn on your phantom power. After turningon your phantom power, then turn on your computor. This will help eliminate the potential for damaging your mic, soundcard, amplifier and monitor speakers, and your ears.

When stopping for the day (or night), do the opposite : be sure to turn off your computor first, then turn off your phantom power, then unplug your condenser mic from the mic cable. This will also help eliminate the same things. ;)
