Microphone to capture this kind of voice...?

I would like to record similar to this vocal (deep, laid back, not very projecting) and would imagine a good condenser would be more sufficient that a dynamic. With a dynamic the gain would need to be very high in order to capture the vocals. When you talk similar to that, the voice does not project as much, which is why I think a condenser would do better since it captures more. I only have an RE20 and SM7 and don't think they can do the job like a good condenser. Am I correct? Here's a clip. Please give me your opinions/experiences.

I'm not sure which mic TD Jakes uses...
Me neither, but wish I knew what that mic was for that recording. Wouldn't you think it was a condenser?

Sounds like the SM7. Could be a U87 but the bottom graininess says sm7 to my ears.

Honestly guys, the question should be WMWJU (what mic would Jesus use?) :)

Yeah thats probably an sm7, are you having trouble getting that sound of it Jay?...hope you like the mic anyway..

After listening to that sample, I would say that, the very best possible mic to use for that kind of recording would be a condenser microphone. Only with the phantom power turned OFF.

I'm saying that listening to that clip gave me the heebie-jeebies, and I think I'm going to have trouble sleeping tonight with the lights out.

Didn't you guys think that recording had an unusally high amount of sibilance? I wonder if it might've been mic'ed too closely and without a pop filter.

Yup, definitely a ton of proximity but I think he likes it that way. Morgan Freeman sounds like that in some narrations too. Just a condenser, up close, no pop filter

I didn't hear anythign that I would describe as sibilance, but maybe I'm just used to a total sizzle sound being sibilance. This just sounds clear and pretty precise. It actually sounds like the sssssssss sounds are not emphasized. It sounds live and real, like the voice would sound if the guy were talkign next to my ear......

I dont think you can get that kind of detail from a dynamic.....at least not a cheap dynamic.

So, when did Barry White become a Christian??

I agree and that's what I was thinking, just not sure what condenser to start with..
And that's not Barry White, hehe.
