I bought a shure sm57, and I was showing it to my brother... He started turning the head, like he was screwing it in, and now it doesn't f***ing work.

Its just kind of loose...

any help?

SM57 windscreens turn. Its not on a screw thread and turning it does nothing, and they're always a bit loose. This isn't a problem.

Shure explanation posted in a thread a few years ago...
"The design has been like this since the 1960's. As the grill is plastic, threads would be a problem as the grill could be overtightened and then crack. Threads also remove material from the plastic and make it more fragile.

The chosen design allows the use of a plastic grill that cannot be removed or over-tightened. The "downside" is that it rotates and that confuses some customers.

As the original designers of the grill are retired or dead, we may never have an accurate answer."

Or do you mean he was unscrewing the capsule from the handle (breaks apart about a third of the way down the handle)? If he unscrewed that and wasn't careful then he could have accidentally [forcefully] disconnected some of the thin connecting wires inside.

He may have disconnected one of the two lead wires that go to the transducer element - not a good thing.
But it can be fixed.
Try going to oktavamod.com this is a microphone modification site and there is a free SM57 mod with pictures that is explained in full.
Use this as a guide to properly take apart your microphone ( you don't have to do the mod) fix what is wrong, and put it back together again.
Hope this works out for you. ;)
In the mean time try screwing your brothers head around and see what happens. :laughings:

This may be the case as well if so it's kind of hard to work on.
For one thing the microphone is full of epoxy and ....well your screwed.

But I believe that for $60. + shipping you can send your 57 to Shure and they will fix it!
I have 3 or 4 dead 57s and this was something that I've been considering.
